Hever Castle Golf Club, Championship Course... Yes, today was one of our Premier fixtures of the year. It was a long drive, but we were met with a warm welcome, a great breakfast & wall to wall sunshine. We were well looked after by our Hever Castle hosts, although we were a little disappointed that we never met 'The Starter' "Trevor".
What a great course, beautiful surroundings and good golf (although maybe only the 7 golfers who scored 30 or more could truly say that). We were led off by Terry & the North Foreland trio of Carl, Lee & Ken. With Lee being our lowest Handicapper (5) & Carl, Ken & Terry showing some good consistent golf this season, it wasn't a surprise that they all scored well & featured in our top 6. Our second group included some dangerously good players on their day... although it was the Stonelees pair of Ady & Alan who both made the top 4, Gerry had a reasonable round but unfortunately Mick only lasted 8 holes - claiming that he was unwell, although it was rumoured that Gerry had been talking about the Hammers a bit too much!!
Group 3 saw a debut for "The Prodigal Son", Joe Walters (he loved the warm welcome by Thanet's 'friendliest' golf society, especially as almost everyone was backing him to beat his Dad)... lining up alongside his Dad, they faced a match against top handicapper Ricky & a third Welshman in this group, Tudor - who loved it that Joe could hit his drive straighter & longer than his Dad... although Rhod had the last laugh as he "won" this 4ball with a mediocre 23pts, led the Walters' boys to a one hole victory & saw Tudor ending up with the Most Golf 'prize'!!
Group 4 all ended up empty handed, but Andy, Derek, Ian & Tony at least could say their average score was better than the mediocre Group 3 & also better than Group 5 whose score was dragged up by Jon's 30, which is a surprise as Bob, Pete & Paul are usually some of our best scorers...
Anyway, enough of this... Here are the winners:
Nearest the Pin winners were Jon (6th), Ken (8th), Bob (12th) & our only winner today with more than 3 letters in their name Carl (14th).
3rd Place: Ken (35pts)
2nd Place: Lee (35pts)
1st Place: Ady (37pts)
Congratulations to Ady on his debut win. We'll look forward to cutting him 2 shots for next time. Whilst Derek & Tudor will enjoy an extra shot (having had 3 consecutive rounds under 30pts). Next month we're at Sheerness on Tuesday 20th August with Breakfast at 9.30am. Watch out for when booking opens...
