Report

What a "smashing" day we had at Sheerness Golf Club... A massive breakfast, a great welcome from the staff, & a nice relaxed putt & chip before our tee time. The prima-liga group of Alan, Lee, Ken & West Ham's very own Ricky led us away - 3 of these ended up in our top 3 places at the end of the day, however, they were oblivious to the shenanigans going on behind them... After running back and fore between the office & the proshop to make sure everything was all ship-shape for another cracking Broadstairs Golf Society day, Rhodri thought it was a good idea just to have two swings with the driver in the nets before his group joined the prima-liga group on the course... however... having had a decent 1st swing, Rhod teed up his 2nd ball & hit another cracker. As he went to retrieve it from the net he was aware of a loud noise in the distance, & just presumed it was from the MOD Shoeburyness Range, although he was aware that the rest of the BGS crew who were stood by the 1st Tee had all turned  to look towards the clubhouse & then back towards Rhod in the nets... "That noise wasn't anything to do with me was it...?" Rhod asked... It was then that it dawned on Rhod that he couldn't see his 2nd ball in the net... apparently (& this was confirmed on the clubhouse CCTV later), Rhod's ball had flown through a small hole in the net, over the heads of the BGS crew on the 1st Tee, curled around the big tree in front of the car park & had dive bombed straight through the back window of a Picasso that was parked next to the Pro-shop... Rhod went to survey his unfortunate 'hole-in-one' & found the window shattered on the floor.  Very kindly Ady went across the car park to retrieve Rhod's ball for him as Rhod went to confess all in the Proshop!

[Post Script: I know you were all concerned about who would be paying for this... but as you'd expect Rhod got in touch with the Picasso's owner, Tony, who didn't think it fair that he had to pay the excess on the insurance; so Rhod got back in touch with the club & they are paying Tony's excess - which points again to what a lovely club Sheerness is & I wouldn't be surprised to us getting out the passports to visit again next year!!]

As for the golf, the course was in good nick, the linksy fairways played havoc with the bouncing balls & the greens were pretty fair - although Tudor didn't think so as he celebrated, his handicap going up one, by playing the most golf (or least: depending on your perspective...). Andy Miller won the Nearest the Pin on the 11th hole, whilst Lee "Big Ball" Bulford won the other two on the 3rd & 17th, whilst also coming 3rd, on count-back (just pipping Rhodri into 4th) but just being squeezed out by Alan Garrett for 2nd place (all on 34pts). However, after his 3rd place last month, we saw Ken 'the shuffle' Tinklin come in with 38pts for his maiden BGS victory and a two shot cut. Well played Ken...

Another worthy mention is Sean Rutt's 33pts which included a sandy eagle on the Par 4 eighth hole which saw him walk away with the £16 two's money... & a big smile on his face.

Next month we're in Boughton for a 9.15am meet on Wednesday 11th September - all are welcome!
