A Poem by the Society

’Twas the game before Christmas, who'd make the cut? 
It's the Five Club Challenge at Westgate's "Pitch & Putt!" 
The breakfast was supreme, conversations were great, 
the Golfer of the Year would be from the last eight.

Twenty-four golfers, in six four-balls divided, 
Alas, no Nearest-the-Pin markers provided. 
The breeze was a-blowing to keep us on toes, 
But the weather was mild, as the December sun rose.

With Rhod and with Carl checking lists and the scores, 
While Ben stayed for breakfast before hitting his chores. 
And Daniel from Sheerness came down for a greeting, 
To size up the gang for a future year’s meeting.

But before the first tee-off, the room became still, 
To remember the friends who have climbed the last hill. 
Rhod led us in silence for those we hold dear, 
For Billy and others we’ve lost in the year.

When out on the fairway there rose such a clatter, 
I turned ‘round my head to see what was the matter. 
‘Twas Kyle from Milwaukee, a guest from the States, 
Whose drive found the train tracks—the cruelest of fates!

And Rhod was a-wandering, looking quite fixed, 
Till five holes had passed and he saw he’d been mixed; 
He’d swung with his six when he thought it a nine, 
A miracle truly that his score stayed so fine!

The par-3s were hunted by men with a mission, 
Jon the Beard, Lee and Mick (twice) found a scoring position. 
Rhod, Carl, Ady and Jim also hit the mark, 
Collecting their "Nearest the Pins" before it went dark.

On the twelfth, there was drama! A squawk and a scream! 
As Jim hit a seagull halfway to the green! 
The bird tried to fly with the ball in its beak, 
A highlight of golf that Jim will talk of for weeks.

The final four-ball, 18th hole, all but serene, 
The Golfer of the Year title had reached the last green. 
Poor Pete was "the bridesmaid" two years in a row, 
As Alan hit birdies and put on a show!

The 19th was lively with laughter and cheers, 
For Steve Bailey, today's winner, we toasted our beers! 
"Most Golf" was for Rob, in the cart he did skid, 
While the Secret Santa winners all collected six quid.

With Bob and with Ricky in Christmas attire, 
The charity box grew a little bit higher. 
As Ant, Jon, Mick, Sean and Smoggie gave "twos" money back, 
We toasted a year that had been quite a "crack."

We’ll see you next season, on fairway and green, 
The best group of golfers that Broadstairs has seen! 
And I heard them exclaim as they drove out of sight, 
"Happy Golfing to all, and to Al, a good night!"

As we put the clubs away for the final time this year, Rhod and Carl would like to say a massive thank you to all you amazing golfers. It’s been a year to remember.

We'll see you on Jan 21st, but in the meantime have a great Christmas and keep in touch.
