Apparently lightning does strike twice in the same place... fortunately there was no lightning as the heavens opened just before our scheduled 1st Tee, however we did end up with a four way tie for the positions for the second year in a row at Kings Hill. More on that later. The morning started in the usual way with a great breakfast, good conversations and the shenanigans of the 4-ball draw. For some bizarre reason Rhod & Carl sent the double-buggy group out last & then their 4-ball kept moaning about how slow the 1st group were. To be fair, Tudor, Ed, Steve & Daniel did look like they were on a summer stroll through the countryside forgetting that the rest of us were wanting to speed through the wind, rain & cold. Although, they did seem to be a bit annoyed when Group 2's Caddie, Rob, was sent with a polite message to get a move on, but at least they sped up...
It was a pleasure to welcome Lodgey, our website guru, back today for his 1st outing since February. Although, the delight faded a bit when Lodgey won the 'Nearest the Pin' comp on the 6th and 17th holes, although everyone cheered up a bit when they realised he'd nicked the 17th off Bouncy Dave. The 11th was won by Rhod & the 11th by Rich Epps, another we welcomed back for the 1st time in a while. No-one had a 2, so the prize money rolls over to next month.
Most Golf went to Daniel MacLorg, although to be fair he only played 10 holes, as he had to go & do the school run; but it doesn't seem fair to give it to Mark Nelson who was joining us for the 1st time today. Hopefully we'll see you again soon. Mark came as a guest of Simon, who was on fire for the front 9. Having parred the 1st & blobbed the 2nd, Simon went on a remarkable run of 21pts over the next 7 holes, including 5 net birdies and 1 net eagle. How Simon didn't translate this into a victory will go down in BGS folklore & may give Simon a few sleepless nights. At varying points of the front nine Simon held a 6 point lead over his 3 main rivals, if they'd been a 4-ball it would've made for a compelling viewing. Although with just 3 holes to go & a 4 point lead over the 3 chasers not many could've foreseen what was to unfold. 8 pts on the last three holes for John Knight, Rhod & Alan combined with just 4 pts for Simon meant that for the 2nd year running there was a four way tie. Simon's great front 9 worked against him as countback is worked out on the Back 9. For the 2nd time in the past 3 months, Simon has come 4th & no prize. A 6ft putt on the 18th meant that Rhod held his nerve to pip John Knight to become the clubhouse leader, however it didn't last long as Alan parred the 18th to win 1st place for the 2nd month running. Impressive golf from Alan who had been cut 2 shots today due to last month's victory, & now stands on the precipice of a record equalling hat-trick. Is there anyone who can stop him as we take on Boughton next month?
The Team Comp was won by Group 2 (Ady, Carl, John Knight & Rhod) with an impressive 139pts, 8 clear of the next best, so a nice £5 in the kitty for them.
Next Game: Wednesday 18th November: B'fast at 9.30am & 1st Tee at 10.30am.
