Following another amazing Augusta Masters tournament on the weekend, 22 wannabee golfers turned up at Canterbury Golf Course hoping to emulate Rory. Jon Martin was hoping to follow-up last month's win at Sittingbourne, although his two shot-cut wouldn't help his cause! Smoggie was also still suffering from a one-shot cut from his North Foreland victory in February. News was trickling through that a few of the golfers had been out for a practice round at Canterbury the previous day... with rumours that the Handicap committee were going to introduce a few more cuts for this demonstration of keenness!
The sun was shining, the bacon rolls were tasty, the 4balls were drawn... & off they went. The Rhodfather was off to a quick start with Birdies on the 1st & 3rd as he quickly amassed 10pts. Although it was Ben who was bringing the entertainment... having put his Tee shot on the 3rd into the weird red hazard mound & taken a few shots to get out... he was delighted when the 2nd group pointed out that today's official tee box was actually at the start of the fairway & not where the 1st group had teed off... Ben duly took the reprieve & put his tee shot within 12ft of the pin. He missed the Eagle putt but tapped in for a Birdie. It was the 7th hole that brought the most bizarre moment for the 1st group, when Ben's huge T-shot suddenly disappeared in mid-air. Could it have been zapped by the pylon wires? It was nowhere to be seen! That was until they were on the 9th hole... & as Ben strode up towards the green, there was his slightly-singed ball from the 7th waiting for him just off the fairway!!
The front 9 brought some pretty good scoring with Rhod, Lee, & Bouncy Dave all scoring 21 points... which was 1 point more than Chopper picked up over all 18 holes to earn him the Most-Golf 'award'. The three nearest the pins on the front were won by Arthur (2nd hole), Alan (5th hole) & Carl (8th hole). Whilst the two on the back nine were won by Dave Wain (11th hole) & Ady Calland (17th hole).
As the wind picked up on the Back 9, scoring got harder, but this is where the class shone through... which is why Dave came in bouncing as he handed one of his best BGS scorecards in... 36pts, surely he'd be winning some golf balls today! However... it wasn't to be... 4th place was respectable but it doesn't get you any prizes! Carl (36pts) squeezed past Dave on countback into 3rd, whilst Alan (36pts) squeezed past Carl into 2nd place... which left our winner, Lee 'Big Ball' Bulford on 37pts. Lee remarkably was level par, off his H.Cap of 4, with 2 holes to go... but still, even blobbing the 17th & getting just one point on the last, made for one of the most impressive rounds we've seen... however, we'll still cut him a shot for his next game. Well played Lee... & Alan & Carl... unlucky Dave! but at least you were able to get some golf ball prizes as Carl had to leave early! Thanks Carl!
The 2s money was shared between Dave W & Carl (£11 each) whilst the Team comp was won by Group 5: Lee, Jim, Arthur & Tony (£6 each).
Next Month: we join with the St Stephen Golf Society for our annual Charity Day : "Wear Blue for Ethan". Where we raise money for the MPS Society. Look out for the poster with all the details... gather a 4ball together or sign-up as an individual. Save the date in your diary: Friday 15th May: 11.30am...
