Report

At last... we get to Tudor Park... having booked initially for November & then having to deal with the Marriott admin maze (it's no wonder Rhod's got even more grey hairs...) we turned up to a great breakfast and another incredible sunny day.  Combine this with a group of new friends joining us from the St Stephens Golf society made for a memorable day...

Today was the Inaugural (1st) Broadstairs Golf Society v's St Stephens Golf Society Challenge.  Great conditions lead to the top 10 all scoring over 32 pts... Third place, on countback, was Jon Hunnisett with 36pts. Second place, which eased all the stresses of organising the day, was Rhodri with 37pts. First place, & another popular 1st time winner with the Society, was Jamie Baker with an impressive 38pts. Well played Jamie!

The four 'nearest the pin' prizes went to Bob (4th Hole), Jamie (7th Hole), & Nigel (Mr St Stephens) got both the 10th & the 17th... although the 10th has to be the luckiest shot of the day having the greenside bunker to thank for sling-shotting the ball back onto the green...  Chris managed to live up to his St Stephen's reputation by playing the most golf... (Although apparently there's a Wooden Spoon shortage so no "prize" today!!)

The St Stephen's crew encouraged us to do a 2's competition which Lee & Rhod duly shared... & there were muted calls to re-instate the fine system, which mainly seemed to be with the aim of fining Rhodri... firstly for slow play ('allegedly' - although he was continually apologising for Group 3 holding up the final two groups), secondly for leaving his driver & Pink Panther head cover randomly in the rough on the 3rd hole (Thank you guys for making sure I got it back on the fifth hole), & thirdly for short-changing the winner out of £5 (sorry, Jamie, you can have that off your next game...)

I'm sure there would have been a fine for Bob as well, when after a slight miscalculation he sent his trolley zooming into the woods...

As for the competition...

  • The Broadstairs' 3-ball won 3 & 2.
  • In Group 3, Rhod & John (Broadstairs) managed a final hole victory over Nigel & Howard following a great 18 hole battle...
  • In Group 4, Lee & Ken (Broadstairs) sprinted to a 4 & 3 victory over Chris & Ricky...
  • In Group 5, Paul & Derek (St Stephens) stopped a clean-sweep by gaining a 4 & 2 win over Gerry & Rich.

The festivities ended with St Stephen's skip Paul presenting Jamie with the "hastily found" trophy and talk of a rematch in the future...
