Report

Wahey! We've completed our first full season after the Covid years & finally Carl has handed on the Player-of-the-Year trophy he won in 2019 (more on that later).

Today's End of Season game took place at Boughton Golf Club, home of the swanky Cave Hotel... most of us wanted to find a cave to shelter in when met by the rain for the 8.15am Tee off for the Par 3 challenge (apart from the 5 who opted to stay in bed longer rather than face the wet conditions).  It seems to be this year's theme, but once again Bob came up trumps and enjoyed a 3 shot win over his closest competitors Lee & Rhod.

A great breakfast in the swanky restaurant & all 17 of us (including the 5 rain-avoiders) were ready for the main course; there was a debate whether those who'd braved the conditions deserved an extra Handicap point - but for the integrity of the competition we decided against the popular option.

Ken found it one game too many, after the N.Foreland posse's tour of Le Touquet, & 'won' the most-golf award - which, in reality, was just a naming & shaming session. However, Gary who'd organised the Le Touquet tour was still showing some French flair ending up with 36pts, which was only good enough for a share of 4th place (or actually 6th place on countback...). It was great to welcome back Barry Mitchell who came in 3rd on 37pts, missing out on 2nd place to Ian Lodge (creator of our own swanky new website: broadstairsgolf.co.uk) on countback. However, no-one was able to match today's winner... as he made one final, last gasp, attempt to keep the 'Player-of-the-year' trophy for another year... yes, our winner was Carl with a whopping 43pts & we're looking forward to a whopping handicap cut as well... Today's Nearest the Pin winners were Jon, Terry, Jamie & Lee - they all won a sleeve of balls each.

As we eagerly awaited our Burger & Chips - we had a brief review of the season. It's been a transition year as we've had a change of leadership... a low of 11 golfers at Broome Park in November & a high of 24 at Westgate in December; we congratulated Lee for the biggest Handicap change: from 13.7 in October to 5.0 today...

Whilst Dave Sears was no-where near 'most-golf' played today & he hasn't matched Steve Evans or Mark Hall's three time winners of the 'most-golf' title this year - he ended up with the sleeve of balls 'prize' as he was the only one of the trio who played today.

Our new 'King Pin' competition was a season long quest to see who'd win the most 'nearest-the-pin' competitions. The winner was Rhod with 7 nearest the pins - after his round today, he really appreciated the box of balls as a prize.

Finally, it was time to unveil the main winner. Alas, even with today's great score, Carl wasn't able to catch Bob but it did enable him to leapfrog Jon Hunnisett, Pete Kenyon, & Rhod to finish a creditable 2nd in the 'Player of the Year' standings.  However, Bob was presented with the trophy after a season that saw him win an event for the 1st ever time, ending up with 3 victories, as well as today's Par3 challenge & ending with a whopping 227pts from his best 6 games (an average of just short of 38 - surely that Handicap needs to come down further!! although it has dropped 5 from the season high of 22).  Congratulations Bob! Well played! We hope you enjoy the golf-balls and the 4 ball voucher.

Next season will begin in January as we change to a calendar year season... so October, November & December will just be a chance to get ready for the new season & to invite a few more golfer friends to come & join us.

Next Game: Wednesday 19th October at St Augustines. Breakfast at 8am.
