On a balmy October day, our small band of merry men tucked into a magnificent breakfast at St Augustines Golf Course. Whilst a little bemused at an 8 o'clock start and surprised at there just being 11 of us, the merry men soon cheered up as they discovered there'd be a Nearest the Pin prize on all of the six Par 3s. In fact there was the possibility that 10 of the 11 golfers could walk away with a prize. Although Dave Sears wasn't too impressed when he discovered that the prize for Most golf was just a half-hearted clap from the Merry Men.
At 9am, in glorious sunshine, our three groups took to the autumnul fairways to face increasingly blustery conditions. The first group consisted of Big Ball Bulford, Bouncy-Castle Dave & The Rhodfather. This was obviously the "youngsters" of the society - which showed when they finished a good 45mins before the other groups. Group 2 had the returning Andy Miller surrounded by 3 St A members: Jon, Jamie & Terry. Whilst the final group was again 3 St A members: Bob, Carl & Nigel, joined by Chris who was desperate to shake off his 'favourite for the wooden-spoon' tag...
It turned out that Carl & Bob hadn't got the memo about sharing the prizes around... Carl winning 'Nearest the Pin' on both the 6th & the 8th holes; whilst Bob goes one better with 'Nearest the Pin' on the 4th and the 13th, whilst also coming in with the prize for 3rd place, following a round of 33pts off his new 16 handicap. What else would you expect from our newly crowned Player of the Year? Fortunately there were still enough Nearest the Pins left for Big Ball Bulford to claim the 16th, and last season's 'King Pin' winner, yours truly. to bag the 15th...
2nd place with 35pts was Terry Porter on his home patch, but even Terry was way behind this month's winner, Nigel, with a whopping 40pts & is the first recipient of our new voucher prize - a free round with the Broadstairs Golf Society... yes, that's right, the stakes are rising...
Next month we're at Etchinghill on Wednesday 9th November for B'fast at 9am and 1st Tee at 10am. Don't forget to sign-up & bring some friends...
