Hot Hot Hot... What a great day in the sunshine welcomed us to our first visit to Kings Hill Golf Club. This was one of our more 'prestigious' (expensive) courses and it didn't disappoint. Having seemingly navigated our way onto 'The Truman Show' film set, as we drove through this USA-styled Kent village, we were greeted by a splendid club-house and an even better breakfast.
The usual 'Laurel & Hardy' show preceded the draw for today's groups & our 19 golfers, plastered in sun-cream headed out to enjoy Kings Hill's practice facilities. The golf-course is located on the former RAF West-Malling air base & still has two of the wind-socks alongside the 1st/9th fairways & the 10th/18th fairways, a reminder of its 'flying' past.
Our current 'Player of the Year' Bob McDougall, was certainly flying today - I could imagine him in a Bomber Harris jacket along with a scarf & a great moustache... anyway, a great final 7 holes including a birdie, & a couple of pars, helped Bob to glide to a maiden win of this season with 37pts. It's Bob's 4th win in our last 18 gatherings and it's no surprise that Bob's in pole position for retaining the Player of the Season trophy. Hot on Bob's tail today was last month's winner Nigel, who'd been cut a shot (which obviously isn't enough when he's on this form!), however Nigel was pushed into 3rd place, on countback, by Lee 'Big Ball' Bulford with a very impressive 36 points off his 6 handicap, especially considering Lee had the 'most-golf' "award" last month!
Lee also won Nearest the Pin on the 17th. Bouncy Castle Dave proved a popular winner when he got closest on the 8th, whilst one of our visitors, Derek Bevan, from our friends at the St Stephens Golf Society got closest on the 6th & the 11th.
A special mention to Chris Snell who despite having had surgery on a detached retina recently, battled bravely to 20 points and the 'most-golf' "award". All the best with your on-going recovery Chris.
Final award went to Terry who won the 2's competition... not a simple birdie for Terry, but an Eagle on the Par 4 7th hole... Nice One Terry!
Next month we're back at the Weald-of-Kent on the 12th July with breakfast at 9.30am - everyone's welcome.
