Hopes were high as the Broadstairs Golfers gathered at the Weald of Kent course for our July outing. The sun was shining, the course was looking splendid & we had our usual hearty breakfast inside us. The 1st Tee is straight over a lake and it sets up a course with lots of opportunities to lose balls. Carl had reminded everyone of Rhod's 'keep it safe' 5-iron from last year which went straight in the wet stuff, but alas Rhod got drawn in the last group so it left it for Ricky & Pete to provide the entertainment by finding water on the 1st. The 17 of us managed to lose a total of 47 balls between us - which made Dave 'the bouncy-castle man' jump for joy as that was what he guessed in the lost-ball comp! Dave contributed 5 of that count himself but not as many as Chris who lost 6 of those disobedient dimpled spheres... Ironically, the prize of a sleeve of balls went the only player not to lose a single ball - Gerry, the former head teacher, using his experience to make those golf balls obedient.
With last month's winner, 2022 'Player of the Year' & current leader of our 2023 'Player of the Year' title, Bob McDougall, out of sorts. It left today's comp up for grabs. 10 of the 17 golfers scored 16 or more on the front nine, setting up an exciting home stretch. We ended with one of our closest ever result with three top scoring with 38pts. The calculators & rule-books came out to help us work out the final positions. This left Rhod in 3rd place, Harvey in 2nd place on his 1st outing with us (well played Harvey), & Jon Hunnisett recorded his 1st victory since last April's visit to North Foreland. Jon also won a nearest the pin, which provided him with the society's only 2 of the day. Rhod, our current 'King of the Pin' holder, bagged two Nearest the Pins which puts him clear again for this year's title. The final Nearest the Pin was a popular winner in Rich Epps.
Did anyone realise that 'Bouncy Castle Dave got a birdie on the 1st hole? I'm not sure if that was mentioned much after the game!!
In the race for the 2023 'Player of the Year' title (best 6 scores count), Carl has taken a 1 point lead over Bob, who's rueing being out of sorts today...
Next month you'll need your passports as we play the linksy Sheerness, on the Isle of Sheppey.
