Wet, Wet, Wet... that's the main thing that can be said about today. The one thing that united all of our golfers today was the moans about the weather... but as bad as the weather was, the company made up for it. Of course, we all know that "We'll get by with a little help from our friends".
Rhod failed big time with the weather, proving that he's not as good at "Walking on Water" as His mate JC. Anyway, back to this "Morning"... it began with a great breakfast, the usual amusing group draw (shame Gerry had called in sick, as that's usually his favourite part of the day... Hope you're feeling better Gerry!), & then we were off, "Step by Step". The "Temptation" was to pay "Lip Service" to the weather forecast. However, most were well wrapped up with all their waterproofs nearby... that is, apart from our wet weather expert from Wales who didn't bring any waterproof trousers & spent half the round complaining about his wet, wet, wet gluteus maximus... "Strange".
With 27 golfers braving the weather, the 1st group was a three ball, who finally "Broke Away" from the chasing group when one of their crew made a "Sweet Surrender" to the rain and made a quick exit to a drier place "Somewhere, Somehow". This left just a two ball & the North Foreland Seagulls saw their chance & tried to make off with Anthony's ball which had surprisingly made its way to the 4th green... the ball was moved but not stolen, however Ant soon wished the Gull had been successful as he followed up this Feathered Friend affair with a four putt... Golf indeed is a "Sweet Little Mystery".
Let's get on with the winners... eyes were on Gary Fairhall after he was heard reminding everyone who would listen that he was the reigning champion & that with his generously inflated handicap he was the 2 to 1 favourite. Unfortunately, and not too dissimilarly from his beloved Chelsea this season, Gary started badly, had a rubbish patch in the middle, and ended poorly. Fortunately, Gary is a very hopeful character and is still off to Wembley on Sunday. We're not sure everyone will be "Blue for you" this weekend Gary!! So, back to the winners... our Nearest to the Pin winners were Pete Kenehan (5th & 11th), Arthur Fairhall (7th) & Ian Lodge (18th). One surprise was that Pete didn't get a 2... but this pleased Paul McGuirk as he got the only 2 of the day, & he could be heard saying that is "All I want" as he waltzed off with the £27 2's money. Most Golf Played was a scrap between Dave 'Bouncy Castle' Sears & debutant Jake Beer, with neither of them singing "Wishing I was lucky"... (Anyone fed up of the Wet, Wet, Wet songs yet...???).
3rd place was won on countback by John Knight (31pts). 2nd Place was Lee 'Big Ball' Bulford (32pts). 1st place & 1st time winner was Alan Garrett with 33pts. All agreed that these were great scores in today's conditions. That's what's great about the Broadstairs Golf Society - it's a very encouraging group, you could say that "Love is all around".
Next game is Wednesday 13th March at West Malling (Spitfire Course) with Breakfast at 9am... look out for the WhatsApp message telling you when bookings open...
