Amidst the continuing rainy season, that seems to have gone on for months, our hardy bunch of golfers turned up with their usual cheeriness for a day of dry golf at West Malling (apart from those that found the numerous water hazards).
After a great breakfast, and the usual fun & games of the group draw, the newcomers were welcomed and there was a bit of intrigue as we waited for Daren “with one r”. Rhodri was pleased that everyone was keen to greet Daren, until he was told that everyone thought he’d said “Daren with one arm”...
Everyone was ready for a couple of practice putts & the 1st Tee drama.
Considering how wet it’s been, the course was in decent nick, the wind wasn’t too keen and this led to 17 of the 28 golfers scoring 30pts or more.
To cut a long story short, (mainly because I’m still coming to terms with a 4-1 Veteran’s cup Quarter final defeat at the hands of last month’s winner, big Alan Garrett... & a wooden spoon in the rugby), here are the winners...
Squeezy (Paul Sequenza) has gone straight to the top of this year’s King Pin comp after picking up the award on the 3rd and 9th holes. Derek Bevan won the 18th with a great 8 iron which just got inside Arthur’s driver (although, as Arthur always says, “there are no pictures or clubs on the scorecard” so it doesn’t really matter which club you use). Arthur was also just about to receive the prize for the 16th when we heard that Alix had got closer but in her excitement had forgotten to write her name on the market (sorry Arthur)... Arthur was being a true gentleman about this until he heard that Alix also had two 2s, meaning that his 2s winnings had been halved to just £7, with Lee ‘Big ball’ Bulford getting the other £7 and Alix skipping away with £14. Well played!!
Today’s top three: Tony with 34pts, Ian Horsham 35pts, and first time winner Derek Bevan, on countback, with 35pts & a H.cap slashed by two. Well played you three...
Best comment of the day was Bob’s “oh Daren’s got a prosthetic arm then”... So I’m off for some elocution lessons before next month’s outing to The Ridge on Tuesday 16th April. Look out for the booking message in a couple of weeks...
